A 500 internal server error is a common web server error. It is not specific to WordPress and can happen with any website. However, a 500 internal server error is a common symptom when a WordPress website has been hacked and compromised with malware or malicious PHP code. This is due to the fact that the hacker has injected malicious code into the website’s PHP files so the Apache web server can no longer process, parse, or serve the PHP files and display the generic 500 apache error message.
